Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Falling prey to this greed beyond all measure, they are losing their good sense. What the student must recognise first of all is his own capacity, his own fitness, his own life, his own honesty: these he must recognise himself. If a man does not recognise his own nature, even if he goes to the moon, he will find no Śānti there. If he keeps bad feelings and bad qualities within himself, however holy the place he lives in, he cannot attain Śānti.

With an atom bomb held in their hand, they keep shouting, “Śānti, Śānti!”; even though they can reach the moon, they cannot attain Śānti and happiness:

So it has been said.

Students! You must make your feelings pure. You must believe firmly, “I am the embodiment of Saccidānanda.” The very air around us is not seen by our eyes. Try to catch hold of that air, and it does not come into your hand. Can you argue, for that reason alone, that there is no air? Without that air, how would you be alive? So the one who says there is no God is saying that he himself does not exist. So divinity fills everything everywhere. Because we have not gained the strength and the ability to recognise it, we are sunk in these calamities and are forgetting what is real.

Cultivate the Ātma principle

Embodiments of Prema! The divine principle is present in all things. That is what we must recognise today. Unity in diversity: we must make clear what the oneness is that is present in all. That oneness is Sat-Cit-Ānanda. Sat means “that which is”. Cit is the awareness that goes with it, which makes everything known. If there were no “that which is”, where would there be any knowing of it?
