Today the world is full of great intellectuals, of scholars given to quibbling arguments, of experienced politicians, and of sannyāsīs in saffron robes. Today, within humanness, divinity has become empty. There is nothing but quibbling arguments; character and sympathy are nowhere to be seen, and the divinity within humanness has been forgotten today. What ought to be foremost in the people of the world today is humanness itself.

However many branches of learning a person has studied, however many offices he has held, however great a scientist he may be, if he has no human values he will not be counted a human being. Today we must try to develop humanness. What is humanness? When mind, word and action are one, that alone is humanness. When mind is one thing, action another and word another, it turns into demonhood, which is contrary to humanness. We must experience the principle that goes with trikaraṇa śuddhi. To take the name of a human being and yet act against humanness is a disgrace to humanness itself. Only when a seed is put into the earth does it become a tree and give flowers and fruit. When that same seed is put on a rock, it does not grow. Humanness can grow only in a spiritual heart; it cannot grow in the hearts of all. That is why, if humanness is to grow today, we must develop sympathy and coordination among the various spheres of life.
