Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

People are crows. Do not give in to their blame or their praise; serve the Lord of the world.

Once Uddhava went to the Gopīs. Mothers, you forget your duty all the time and keep on, “Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa!” you keep saying. You are falling under the anger of your mothers-in-law and your husbands. Everyone in Gokula thinks you are all misusing your time. Then the Gopīs said: Uddhava! Does the cuckoo give up its song for fear of the cawing of crows? Does the swan change its form because the cranes are running about? For us there is nothing other than God. Let anyone think whatever they like. People are crows. We will not give up our sacred song for fear of the cawing of those crows. With this, Uddhava's mind too was changed. This is unwavering Bhakti. This is pure Jñāna. That is true faith. Breath itself is faith. You love your mother; what is the reason for it? The faith that she is my mother is the reason. There are students who answer like this. When you are asked why you worship God, why can you not answer, He is my God? What is your experience of it? No experience: this is my faith. So faith has no reason. There is no experimentation for it. My experience is my faith. So in Bhakti for God two things alone are needed: faith and experience. Prema is the root cause of both.

Embodiments of Prema! In this age nothing surpasses nāmasmaraṇa. Today man wastes most of the twenty-four hours. Without wasting time, one must make time worthwhile. Kāla. Ka means what is auspicious. Happiness. La means that which gives. That which gives all that is auspicious is kāla. Time swallows the body. The Lord of time swallows time itself. So we must not neglect time, which is the form of God. In your free time, do the nāmasmaraṇa of God. While doing your karmas with your hands, do nāmasmaraṇa. Worldly things need not be taken into the head. Hand in Society Head in the forest that is real rest.
