In plain words
Though they go on developing the body more and more, their life stays clinging to the life of Prakṛti. What does this “prākṛta” mean? This is what has to do with the world. We take it to be prākṛta. That is not what the state of prākṛta means. Without ceasing, for the sake of gaining the pleasure of the senses, man misuses his life, his time, his body; but what is the principle that is the basis of everything? That Satya they cannot enquire into. We imagine that the eyes are what see. We imagine that the mouth is what speaks. We imagine that the ears are what hear. This itself is the state of prākṛta. What sees is not the eyes. What hears is not the ears. What speaks is not the mouth. The principle of the Ātma, which is the basis and the ground of everything, is what gets every task done through these senses. The fan is turning. The bulbs are shining. The stove is cooking. If you think, “The machine is doing its work”, will all these turn, will they shine, if you switch off the current? If this current is not there, can the fan turn? Can the bulb shine? Can the stove cook? Can the machine work? No, no: the current alone is the basis of everything. That itself is the divine power in man. That itself is the Ātma. Only by that principle of the Ātma are all the limbs in man able to work. There is the dead body. It has eyes, but can it see? It has ears. Can they hear? It has a mouth. Can it speak? The one who spoke before, the one who saw before, the one who heard before, is not in this body. That is why all these have stopped still. It has turned into a mere kind of inert thing.
For the pleasure of these senses, for the comfort of the senses, man is wasting his sacred humanness. The more they study, the more the delusion of the senses only grows, and the folly that cannot recognise this Satya keeps growing in them. Then, the more learning grows, the more they hanker after sense enjoyments, sense pleasures, sense comforts. Then what is this wretched study good for? What is the special worth of this study? Is it merely to fill the belly, all this study? Studies that cannot understand the inner meaning will not burn even if thrown into the fire. So only when one experiences learning as well, together with the Ātma, will studies also come about, along with refinement. Man merely thinks that he alone is able to do everything, that he alone is able to see, that he alone has this kind of will power. “Not a blade of grass moves without Your will.” Without God's grace man cannot put even one step forward.
