In plain words
Through this teaching of Nārada's a change came even into the heart of Līlāvatī, a demon's wife, and that change came to her son. What is the reason the children of today are wicked? What is the reason they enter into these evil ways of thinking? What is the reason they develop these bad habits? What is the root reason they delight in joining this bad company? Mothers, while carrying a child, see two films for every one. The feelings in those films enter into the children. So the children are all born film children. These bad qualities, bad ideas, bad thoughts: all of them come from the films alone. So the root cause of all of these is the parents themselves. “Alas, my son does not listen to what I say. Alas, he does not behave as I tell him!” What is the reason? If mother and father are good, there is no room at all for the children to go bad. Whatever kind of saṃskāra goes in, conduct to match those saṃskāras begins. So the change must keep coming at the very foundation. If the sapling is crooked, the tree will grow crooked. So from the beginning many saṃskāras came to be practised among the people of Bhārata. What does saṃskāra mean? It is not some new law. It is not a new decree. It is to keep things from staying just as they were born, to add good qualities to them and set them on a path fit for a human being. To put away bad feelings and nourish good feelings: that is saṃskāra. To put away bad qualities and grow good qualities: that is saṃskāra.
A small example. We cannot eat or use every substance just as it grows. We can give value to a thing that has none. A small example. We grow paddy. But we do not try to eat the paddy just as it is grown. We take the husk off it, cook it well, and only then add tasty things and eat. Left just as it grew, its price stays low. When we make it into rice, its price goes up. If a bag of paddy is fifty rupees, a bag of rice becomes five hundred. See how much its value has risen as saṃskāra came to it. In the same way, gold is born in the earth. It is born in rock. It is gold mixed with dross. When you melt it down completely and purify it in every way, it turns into pure gold. When it turns into this pure gold, its value grows great. In just the same way, in every human nature these three are joined: the animal, the demonic and the human. If we are to make it holy today, we must come from the animal to the human.
