In plain words
Many people, following their own saṃskāras and traditions, carry on sādhanas in many different ways. However long they do sādhana, not even a little change shows in them. Out of despair and dejection, thinking ‘We are not getting the fruit this deserves’, they keep changing from one Name to another. Not only do they change Names; they change religions too. Merely by changing our religion we do not gain God's grace. We must change our outlook. Merely by changing our clothes we do not take on God's qualities. We must change our nature. Only the person who has changed the mind attains true humanness.
A small example. In a play, a man comes on in the first scene dressed as a beggar. But in the second scene the same man appears in royal splendour. In another scene this same man appears as a minister. All the spectators take it that the beggar is one man, the king another and the minister another. The reason? The costumes he has put on are the only reason for this. The spectators set themselves to notice only his costume and his action. At home the dog knows its master. Whether the master puts on an evening dress, a night dress or an office dress, however many dresses he changes, the dog goes by his voice alone. It takes no notice of the costume at all. Today the dog seems to have reached a far better state than man. For it recognises Śabda Brahman alone. But man today tries to recognise only forms and names. Forms and names are made up. But sound is eternal. Those who take this eternal sound as their ground see the Name as a form made of consciousness. But people who take Prakṛti as their ground see only a form made of clay. The man whose mind is pure is himself a form made of consciousness. The man whose mind is impure is a form made of clay. So we must recognise the difference between what is made of consciousness and what is made of clay. It is not that such divinity is missing from within humanness. Even with this divinity, one binds oneself to this world through one's own worldly vāsanās for the objects of the senses.
We know that God is the embodiment of Prema. God can be bound by the rope of Prema. But He becomes bound only when we long for this Prema for Prema's own sake. He is not bound to us by our praying for worthless things. We must strive for Prema. That is why we must become embodiments of Prema. You should not be a lover. When you are a lover, you love one person only.
