Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

More than learning, you must make the effort to nourish good qualities still further. You must not let excitement grow in you at all over small and trifling things. To recognise this divine principle, devotion to God is essential. Only when that faith is deep can we gain the divine strength that carries us through any loss or hardship, any defeat, any blame or reproach. It is when there is no such full faith that all sorts of ups and downs torment a man. So first of all we must develop this faith. Here is a small example. Among the five Pāṇḍavas, three were the chief. Dharmaja, Bhīma and Arjuna. In the essence of their lives, they achieved these two: Satyaṃ vada, Dharmaṃ cara. Satya is to be spoken, not done. Dharma is to be done, not talked about. And Dharmaja stood as an ideal in both, in speaking Satya and in practising Dharma. Dharmaja, who stood as the ideal in these two, kept a third in view as well. His faith was not that God speaks Satya. His faith was that whatever God says is Satya. Whatever God speaks is nothing but Satya. There is a great difference between this and saying that God speaks Satya. That is why he uttered ‘Aśvatthāmaḥ hataḥ kuñjaraḥ’, holding that whatever God says is Satya. This was his faith. How was Dharmaja, the supreme devotee, able to keep his strength? Bhīma on the right, Arjuna on the left. Dharmarāja in the centre: the people of Bhārata must recognise well the inner meaning of this. Bhīma on the right was not a man of brute strength alone. He was strong in Dharma. He took the word of Dharmarāja, his elder brother, upon his head and walked by it; he was not one to misuse his brute strength in it. Arjuna, on the left, was pure. Arjuna means purity. Besides this purity, he had strength and ability. That is why he received many kinds of titles from Indra and from everyone. He was not one who received a Padma Śrī or a Padma Vibhūṣaṇa, like the people of Bhārata today. Arjuna, Phalguna, Pārtha, Kirīṭī, Śvetavāhana, Bībhatsu, Savyasācī, Vijaya, Kṛṣṇa, Dhanañjaya: such great titles he received. What kind of man was he who received such titles? Ever pure. It was because both were there, strength on one side and purity on the other, that Dharma went on shining. Every devotee must have firm faith and firm trust on one side. On the other side there must be Arjuna, who is purity and cleanness. Only because these two were there did Dharmaja's fame spread through the world. Had Dharmaja been alone, he would not have won such fame. For all of Dharmarāja's fame and honour, Bhīma and Arjuna were with him like his shadow.
