Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

At this all the pandits grew angry. Making up many, many more reasons besides, and showing all kinds of points to say that he was acting against the law of the state, they tried to put him in prison.

Truly, ‘Satyaṃ jana virodhāya asatyaṃ janarañjanaṃ’: today Satya has become hostile to this world. Untruth alone appears most sweet, joyful and delightful, as a kind of Satya. Saying one thing and doing another: this is against the Śāstras. Whoever tries to put even one or two of the things he says into practice is the best of men. To develop this kind of practice, the sādhus and sannyāsīs of those days lived in the forest. They went on with yogic sādhanas of many kinds. For what do we do these yogas? Is the attainment of God gained in any way through this yoga? No. No. We take up yoga only for the control of the senses. This is what Patañjali called ‘yogaḥ cittavṛtti nirodhakaḥ’. By restraining these modifications of citta one can live a long time. Who should live a long time? If the good man, the man of good qualities, the man rich in right conduct, the pure-hearted man lives a long time, the world benefits. If the wicked, the evil and the men of bad conduct live a long time, only harm comes of it to the world, not good. That is why they came to the decision that sādhakas who had renounced all attachment should practise this kind of yoga. When such sādhakas live a long time, there is great benefit to society. Then they followed certain rules for it. The children must listen to this very carefully.

This body of five elements has certain laws. The more gently we take in and let out the air we breathe in and breathe out, the longer we live. The faster we take each of our breaths in and out, the sooner death comes. There are certain rules for this. The elephant and man breathe in and out twelve or thirteen times a minute. By following this rule, man can live up to a hundred years. Creatures such as the snake and the tortoise breathe in and out only seven or eight times a minute. That is why the snake and the tortoise can live two hundred years, three hundred years. The monkey, the dog and the cat all breathe in and out thirty or forty times a minute. That is why they give up their life very quickly, within twelve or thirteen years.
