In plain words
If that machine goes wrong in any way, we bring the parts in from abroad. So this kind of business has gone beyond the nation and spread internationally. A small example. In a car there is a carburettor. For the petrol to pass out of this carburettor there is a small pipe. It is called a jet. In our India you can get this jet for one or two rupees. If we bring this same thing in from America, it costs 200 or 250 rupees. That is how it was in former times. We were not able to make this small pipe called a jet here. Even now you can see it in some businesses. In our Bhārata-deśa they are producing Maruti cars. They assemble them, but the parts all belong to a foreign country. Its horn comes from Japan. They supply it. The horn of this Maruti car wears out within three months. It stops working. What is the reason? In Japan they have no need to use the horn. They produced that horn to suit their own conditions. In the conditions of Bhārata-deśa we have to sound the horn at every step. So it is gone within three months. Today many troubles of this kind arise in this international business. So when things are mixed this way, one part from one country and another part from another, a kind of danger arises too. This is not right. If we want to produce any article, we should be in a position to make all the parts and sub-parts of that article ourselves. Only then do we have a chance of adjustment, of understanding. Now look, people drive a car. The accelerator, and one man doing the steering: there will be an accident. So the accelerator and the steering must be in the control of one person alone. Only then can one drive the car properly. Today the control is in one person's hands. The driving is in another's hands. That is why in our business there are many troubles and losses, and in the end closures take place. So in business matters it is not simply as one management says; you must inquire well into many kinds of things, recognise them properly and understand them.
There are a few more things you must recognise. In this business matter, what does the right value of each article come to for us? If we have produced an article, how much does it cost? How much profit is there on it? How much tax is there on it? Taking all these expenses, taking its costs into account, how much profit then comes on it? Cāṇakya taught this very matter well in the Artha-śāstra.
