Passage 9

In plain words

Service of God joined with selfishness and self-interest is no service of others at all. To give up selfishness, to take everything as being for others, and so to perform actions: that is true dhyāna. Through this there is time waste. There is energy waste. There is life waste. Do all your work while remembering the Name of God. Through this all actions are fulfilled. God is not only in some one place. Sarvataḥ pāṇipādaṃ sarvatokṣi śiromukhaṃ sarvataḥ śrutimalloke sarvamāvṛtya. Wherever you look, He is in everything. If you meditate thinking He is only in one place, it is belittling God. To see God, who is everywhere, at one level only is a narrow feeling. We must cultivate a broad feeling. Only then will discrimination grow in us. Through that, viveka grows. It is through viveka alone that we can recognise the universal to some extent. Today there is vijñāna, but there is no viveka. Vijñāna has grown abundantly, but it is not weighed with viveka. Only when this vijñāna has viveka too can it be put to good use.

Students! What you must do first of all is study your subjects well. Recognise the discrimination that is in those studies. Put what is in them into practice. I have told you many times that there are five kinds of knowledge. But all the students of today stay with a bookish knowledge alone. Some go up from this bookish knowledge and land in superficial knowledge. But general knowledge is missing. Discrimination knowledge is missing still more. How then will practical knowledge come? So practical knowledge is most necessary. It is because there is no practical knowledge that our education stays an artificial education. Our M.Sc boy said it: only when man is right will the whole world be right. Only when man changes will society change. Only when society is good will the country be good. The whole country depends on the qualities of the individual. The qualities of the individual must be developed as a matter of urgency. However much strength, however much cleverness one has, what is the use? There must be good qualities as well.

All the learning of today increases cleverness; it does not increase good qualities even a little. If you have a crore of learning but no good qualities, all such learning is just mud.

What is the use of cleverness without good qualities? Instead of taking three or four degrees, practise one degree: that is enough.
