In plain words
If it makes friendship with water, it sinks down into a pit. It has no legs to go down. It has no wings to fly up. It is the bond of friendship alone that is the link for going up and for going down. The company of the wicked takes you to the very bottom. It brings a downfall. Good company takes you to a high level. So maitrī means that we must form a sacred, close friendship. Who is our true friend? God alone is the true friend. We must develop His friendship. All the friends of today: there is money in the pocket. Father's position is good. Everyone who sees you: hellow hellow; all become friends. Father has retired, the pocket has gone empty; no one says goodbye any more. So long as there is water in the tank, thousands of frogs gather. When the water in the tank dries up, not one frog stays there. This is the friendship of today. But the friendship of God is not like that. Always He stays with you, beside you, in your house, before your eyes, and protects you. Your relations or your friends come as far as the burning ground. Beyond that they take no notice at all of our troubles and losses. God is with you without ceasing. We must recognise that state as friendship. That does not mean we may bear hatred towards the people of the world. Adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ. We must not develop hatred towards anyone. There must be friendship. There must be no hatred. How are we to foster it? Very simple. Hellow! How are you. Good bye good bye. We must not foster it beyond measure. By fostering it beyond measure the mind too goes astray. Speak your words well, too. You cann't always oblige you can speak always obligingly. In this way we must develop friendship.
The second is karuṇā. What is karuṇā? We must melt our hearts. When we see the poor, when we see the wretched, when we see those who have no one, our hearts must be moved; they must melt. We must develop such melting karuṇā. Through that karuṇā humanness blossoms. As lotuses blossom in the rays of the sun, so our heart-lotus too blossoms in the rays of karuṇā. Karuṇā itself is our rays. Our heart itself is the lotus. Only when we come to know karuṇā does the heart-lotus blossom. Only when we hold the feeling of God in every person does karuṇā grow in us.
Muditā means that we must develop śraddhā and Bhakti in sacred works, in meritorious works. But under the influence of Kali, when some fine gathering is going on, when talks on God are going on, a sleep like no other springs upon them. Or else bad thoughts from who knows where come and settle in your head.
