In plain words

If anything, what they develop to some extent is looking this way and that with their eyes. By their misfortune, concentration does not form in them. So the principle of developing our heart in good works, in sacred works, in meritorious works, in works that help others, is what they called muditā. Now the influence of Kali is such that when someone comes and asks for a gift, he says he will give ten rupees. He makes a promise. By the time he goes in, a change comes over him: why ten rupees for him, five rupees will do. By the time he opens the box and takes out the money, a change comes: why five rupees, one rupee will do. In such fickle-minded people, neither karuṇā nor kindness ever grows. Alas! "I said I would give ten rupees; what work will these ten rupees do for him? Well then, I will give another ten rupees": only when one goes on fostering that Prema in this way does that heart too come to experience Ānanda. Only when friendship and karuṇā, these two, join with muditā, does this tyāga too grow.

Now upekṣā. What is upekṣā? Friendship, karuṇā and muditā, these three, must be one. There must be no attachment to the good and no hatred towards the wicked. The principle free of attachment and hatred is what they called upekṣā. It is to hold the two, likes and dislikes, with an even mind. Only then do human values grow in us. So if we want to develop such human values, first of all we must foster faith in God. In such sacred matters we can show śraddhā.

Today Onam is going on in every corner of the land of Kerala. But the Onam held in this Prasanthi Nilayam is the true Onam. The reason is this: in Kerala each family makes pāyasam or paramānnam in its own house, keeps the festival and enjoys it. There, everyone coming together and enjoying this Onam: that is not to be found in Kerala. One or two relations may come together and keep the festival. Here it is Onam in the form of the whole. All the people of Kerala coming together as one and enjoying the joy as though they were keeping it in their own houses: this is a great good fortune. This is something very great. In their own state it does not happen as a festival of the whole. This is the true presence of God. It is a fit cause for developing the Ānanda of God. So you must regard this as a great and special Onam. It is as though the form of Viṣṇu, who is the form of the whole, were painted in the heart. So I wish and I bless that you take the Name of God as your chief boat, rely on this boat in this flowing stream of life, cross over and be blessed; and I bring My talk to a close.
