In plain words
If that fruit does not have the right taste, what do we do? We throw it outside. If it is good, we send it in. In the same way, in this society too, if you live as befits society, that society too will honour you. If you do not behave as befits that society, it will push you away from that society. So man must recognise the truth of what conduct he must live by in this society. So we cannot live even a moment without society.
We are living in this society. We are living as citizens of society. So we must try to nurture this humanness well. God is only the witness; He has neither anger nor Grace, neither of the two. The one who grants both is God. There is one thing He has specially. That is what is called grace marks, you see. In that way He can do anything. See, in our Andhra Pradesh there are some called the Chief Minister's grace marks. There are some called the Vice-Chancellor's grace marks. Then there is no need to study. All are grace marks. What is in the Divine is not like this. Grace comes according to one's own conduct. God acts as though He were angry. But even His anger is Grace. Rain keeps falling; in the rain hailstones fall. Those hailstones hurt a great deal. That too is only water. You see. Those words and deeds are a little harsh, it is true. That is all right. So with God's Grace, even in the anger there is only Grace. So according to the efforts man makes and his sādhanas, grace is something special.
You all know it. God Himself gave Mārkaṇḍeya the boon to live sixteen years as a good son. Mārkaṇḍeya pondered. "My life is only sixteen years. I must live as a good son." With that aim: how are this good path, good feelings, good conduct and good qualities acquired? God alone is supremely full of good qualities. So if I take refuge in Him alone, He will bless me. If you go to a beggar and ask him to give you alms, what will he give? If you go to the potter's house and ask for provisions, what will he give? All he has are empty pots. So when we go and take refuge in this One full of good qualities, those qualities can be given to us. This discrimination Mārkaṇḍeya used first of all. For us there is none other than You. Then he went and prayed to Īśvara; He Himself had given these sixteen years too. According to the sādhanas Mārkaṇḍeya had done, and taking his noble heart as the ground, He Himself in turn changed him into one who lives for ever. That is grace marks. God's resolve cannot be changed; the boon He gave cannot be evaded.
