Passage 2

In plain words

What students must protect today is not the country. They must protect Satya and Dharma. The world rests on Satya and Dharma alone. Satya and Dharma are bearing the world. A world that has protected Satya and Dharma will be safe and well. Victory chooses Satya and Dharma alone; it does not yield in the least to the strength of the arm, the strength of the intellect, the strength of wealth, the strength of authority, the strength of weapons. So students must become broad-hearted, think of themselves as heirs of sacred Satya and Dharma, and strive as they should to make them grow.

This education is the giving of form to Satya, which is the root and the support of social life and of the mind's welfare. Only in the mirror of education can you see the divine human mind and the divine feeling. Instead of being bound by creation, we must bring forth in ourselves the strength and ability to rule over creation itself. Only people who have understood this divine principle of the mind can develop a bond of kinship with the world, with society, with creation, with all the powers that are in man. The awareness in education is not a thing of no worth. When it is turned to the ego, it changes into a kind of narrowness. When it is turned to the Ātma, it comes to fulfilment. So students must give no room at all to the ego; they must study with self-confidence, live out in society the learning they have gained, and strive to pass on its excellence to their fellow men. Education is not merely knowing the letters. We have left Satya and Dharma unmanifest, along with the divinity that is in humanity, and so we are falling into suffering in many ways. What must become manifest in man is Satya and Dharma. But all the educational institutions of today regard the handing out of degrees alone as their one chief aim, and are turning into factories that merely hand out degrees. Receiving a degree alone can never be the excellence of education. We must develop moral conduct. We must foster control of the senses. This is the chief duty of education.

Today's education is hardening the hearts of students. The hearts of students are turning to stone. Compassion and Prema have become a void. Forbearance and sympathy have vanished. Students who should serve suffering mankind are striving to keep their own lives in selfishness and self-interest. We must root out selfishness and self-interest. We must regard service to society as the true sādhana. The culture of Bhārata is very noble.
