In plain words
Today's students themselves are the teachers of the future, so students must become what they should be. It is good students who become good teachers. So this itself is the root purpose with which I started all these educational institutions. Today's students are those who will uplift the Bhārata of the future. When students follow the right path, the whole world progresses in the right way. Only when such educational institutions fill their hearts, on the right path, with the principles of morality and honesty can our country regain its ancient culture. This was the root cause of the ancients winning a great name. The learned of those days were full of forbearance and sympathy. They led a life of Satya and Dharma. So the span of their lives too was long. In today's students this sacred feeling is not seen at all. Forbearance and sympathy are even farther from them. Selfless feelings are not within their reach at all. They regard ego and show as the chief goal of students. These are traits utterly opposed to education. There must be no ego. Still less must there be show. We must kill these two and strive to increase humility and obedience. The root mark of an educated man, if you ask what it is, is humility and obedience. Today they do not give their parents the honour and respect due to them. They take no notice of elders at all. They strut about, thinking they have received some great degree. This strutting is nothing but madness. But this can never be the excellence of education. The truly educated, with obedience, with the wealth of character, devoted to Satya and Dharma, must give society the Ānanda of practice.
Today we make no effort at all towards the supreme support of life. Education today teaches how one must live. But it does not teach what life is. Education that teaches what life is is the true education. We must develop good qualities of this kind. It is through such people that Bhārata will become an example to all countries. From ancient times sacred Bhārata has proclaimed and handed on the spiritual principle in many ways, and has shown the ideal as well. Sacred Bhārata is the land of sacrifice. The land of yoga, the land of karma. In today's system of education they are trying to turn it merely into a land of enjoyment. That is why a disease with no cure has taken hold in the educational institutions. Today we think that what is called science and technology does a great deal of good to the world. As much good as it is doing, so much harm too it does. We must recognise the way it is to be used. Water is pure, white and clean. There is no fault in it at all. But whatever bottle we pour it into, it changes to that colour.
