In plain words
In … way, only when we plant this seed called Prema in the field called the heart does it give, of itself, the fruits called Ānanda, Jñāna and Vairāgya. But if we put the seed in a tin, what becomes of them? … is not an acquaintance with books. How far does an acquaintance with books go? Bookish knowledge … and tomorrow. Day after tomorrow, allergy. There you are. You study for examinations. It stays in the brain only until the examinations are over. You go into the examination hall, pour out onto the paper what … in the brain, and come back again with an empty head. And next week you … nothing. See this learning! This learning does not last. Parāvidyā alone is true learning. The … itself of Prema for the Paramātma is true learning.
Bhakti, they said, means friendship steeped in affection. Love has three qualities. One: it only gives, and the wish to take back never arises. The second quality: no fear. The third: Love for Love. Not material. This alone is the true spiritual principle. Because the examination has come, '… Swami, get me through, I must get good marks': is this Bhakti? This is not true Prema. True Prema is this: He Himself makes you pass. He Himself gives the marks. If gold is in our hand …, we can have any ornament made. Ask for gold. That itself is hiraṇmayāyanamaḥ; hiraṇma…namaḥ means hiraṇmama. Hiraṇmama means gold. Gold means grace. God's Love. If we earn that …, whatever we want we can make. If we … the effort for it, everything is within our reach.
