In plain words

When there is a bag of paddy, we can give only a hundred rupees for it. Only by refining it, removing its husk and bringing it to the fitness to be enjoyed as it should be, does one bag rise to six hundred rupees. What is the reason that paddy worth a hundred rupees a bag rises to six hundred rupees when a bag of it becomes rice? Its value is the very fruit of refining this paddy. We wear a watch on our hand. If you put this watch into the fire, you will not get two annas' worth of stainless steel from it. Yet what is the reason you pay a thousand rupees to have it? Refinement itself is the reason. They have shaped it into something fit for us to use in the right condition. Only because the bolts, nuts and screws have all been set in their right places has it turned into a refined thing. This is just what a rise in value means. In just the same way, the people of Bhārata from ancient times have been refining every single substance and then enjoying it. This is a cloth. But how many kinds of refining did it go through to become a cloth! It is cotton; it turns into yarn, and by weaving this yarn we have shaped it into a cloth. We do not use the cotton just as cotton. We refine the cotton in many ways, and only then do we wear it. In the same way, to be born a human being and to live only as a human being is a waste. We must shape ourselves into a divinity beyond the human. We must make the effort that such refining needs.

So today, for students, along with learning, humility; along with humility, discernment; along with discernment, judgement: through refinements of this kind, humanness can reach its fullness. If a human being wishes to become full, here is a small example: we plant a seed in the earth. The seed so planted starts as a little plant with two leaves. Little by little it grows, with branches and twigs. Then that tree gives us its fruit. This itself is the fullness of the seed. So humanness is only like a seed. When we refine it in many ways, that very thing grows into a broad principle of Prema, into branches and twigs. Only then does this tree give the fruit of peace and security as well. That alone is the fullness of a human being. The divine quality called Prema, Prema, must not be limited to human beings alone.
