Passage 4

In plain words

One fault is transgressing God's command; the other is leading the health astray: it is because they fall into these two faults that people are afflicted with ill health. The tongue is just the same. This tongue was given to us purely so that we would take in food and nourish the health, give delight with joyful news, give happiness with soft and sweet speech, have the means to bring out the feelings and secrets within us, and voice deep feelings to others. Today we are misusing this tongue, which was given so that we would follow this good path and win a good name. Taking intoxicants, eating meat, smoking cigarettes, bīḍīs and cheroots, slandering others, censuring others, hurting others with harsh words: by acts of this kind, against its nature, a person transgresses God's command and defies what has been fixed, and for these reasons he has to suffer troubles of many kinds. In the same way, it is only by using every limb too properly, according to what has been fixed for it, that a person can reach the highest state.

You must not use the senses at your own pleasure, thinking, 'After all, we have them.' They are horses. We must act in the way that suits whatever means and practices we have to adopt to drive a chariot with these horses. The cart must be behind and the horse in front. But today people put the horse behind and the cart in front. Because of this, accidents of many kinds happen. Instead of that, wanting to honour the senses, to love the senses, to have the senses do good deeds of many kinds, if you seat the horses of the senses inside the cart, how can the cart move? Strengthening the senses within us little by little, we make no effort to turn inward and subdue them. Giving the horses no proper work and strengthening them by feeding them without limit also brings some danger. Today we give the horses no proper work.
