In plain words
One day, poor woman, she was very hungry. She served the food on a plate. She sat down at the table. 'Come, come,' she called. Many times, poor woman. But he did not listen. On that table there was a water jug. In anger she ran over. She poured water on his head from that water jug. Then this Einstein, smiling: 'Aha! Every day there used to be only thunder and lightning. Today a downpour has fallen on my head,' he said. See how he brought it into harmony! If a wife poured water on his head with a jug, the men of these times would take up the jug and hit her; but he did not set about that. That itself is control of the senses. Our forebears regarded this as a tapas.
There used to be a Christian preacher called Thomas. He would go to every village and preach that religion. One day he got into a horse cart and was going to a village. On the way, a level crossing lay across the road. The horse was running well. But as it came near that level crossing, the owner of the horse began to beat it hard. Being a preacher, and believing that his chief message was that Jesus's power is compassion itself: 'Sir! Why are you hurting the horse so badly when it is going so well?' Then the cart driver says, 'Sir! Beside this level crossing they have planted some white stones. When it sees these white stones, it gets frightened. The lashes of my whip are a greater fear than that fear. So it leaves that fear and enters this fear. I practise this fear only to get it past that fear,' he said. Then Thomas thought it over. 'Aha! I have learnt from a cart driver how the mind must be turned,' he said. When a sense is running after an object, you must give it the training to draw it away from that object and turn it to another. It keeps entering all sorts of mad paths. When you show it something greater still than what runs against it, it leaves its own path and enters the right one. Suppose there is a stray cow. It goes off to some field of crops and falls to grazing. If we put better green grass than that at home, it will not go to that field at all. It will stay right near the house and graze there. When we set before it something better than what it wanted, it turns that desire into no desire and enters the better path.
