Passage 11

In plain words

That itself is our garland. So let us do good and wear a good garland. We need not do bad deeds and wear a bad garland.

Students! Sacred hearts, sacred time. Gratitude for everything we have enjoyed. Kṛtajñatā: just now a student called it 'gratitude'. For want of it alone he is becoming lower than the cruel beasts in the forest. When someone hands you a towel that has fallen down, you say Thanks. But need you not say thanks to God for doing so much? He gave this vast world. He made a sacred atmosphere. He gave water to drink. He gave air to breathe. He gave a place to live. When He has granted you the five elements, and you enjoy the effect of these five elements and yet do not give thanks to Him who gave you these five elements: this is the great sin. With our own money we bought a mansion. With our own money we built a house. But the corporation people tell us to pay tax on the house. What do they provide? They provide current. They provide water; do they provide it for nothing? For this too they tell us to pay tax. Just for the tap water they give, we pay tax. For lighting two bulbs we pay tax. For giving us the sun that lights this whole universe, what tax are we paying? What tax do we pay to this Paramātma who gave us the breeze from the Malaya hills? To this day, what tax do we pay to God, who poured down heavy rains and cooled this whole world? Need man not think even this much? This is the effect of the tamo-guṇa in our Manas. Manas has three guṇas. The sattva, rajo and tamo guṇas.
