Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So we must bend the body, labour, and do the karma that is our duty. Mend the senses. We must gain enough strength to keep our senses in the right state. Then we must keep the Manas under proper control. Only when we keep this Manas, this body and the senses under our own command do we become masters; otherwise we become slaves. That is why students are called master. A master means precisely one who has brought the senses under control. When this master's level has gone somewhat beyond its bounds, he becomes merely master. After that he becomes mister. So you are now at the stage of master. If we take the name of master and live as slaves, is it not a stain on our very life! We must not give in merely to the senses and take a crooked path for the sake of the senses. You must acquire learning. We must not set our minds at all on other concerns. We must not enter at all into worldly, physical, religious or political affairs. Only then do you become a vidyārthi; otherwise you become a viṣayārthi. When you keep the Manas in the right state you are a student; when you let it into all sorts of paths, stupid.

Dear students! You must take shape as students. To earn a name that truly fits like this, we must establish purity of citta. We must establish steadiness. For this path of steadiness, the spiritual alone is the true support. How many students there are in the world today! There are educated people; yet why is the whole country today wasting away in so many kinds of unrest? We are taking in education only artificially, and it does not go as far as the heart. Heart is inside, art is outside; we spread our life out only in outward sight. We are not developing inward sight at all. So today people use the whole system of education only for selfish ends and their own gain. Without asking at all for the truth of whether it is unjust, wrong or improper, we take a crooked path, earn money somehow, become men in office and hope to take shape as great rich men. That is the very reason many students go abroad.
