In plain words
Because this Manas is forever restless, moving this way and that, the reflection in it also takes shape as restless. 'Cañcalaṃ hi manaḥ kṛṣṇa pramāthi balavad dṛḍham.' So said Arjuna. 'I cannot live with this restless Manas. It is turbulent. It is very strong.' So he prayed. What is the means of making this restlessness steady? This is what they call dhyāna, prayer, contemplation: along nine paths of this kind it can be made steady little by little.
Śravaṇaṃ kīrtanaṃ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaṃ pādasevanaṃ arcanaṃ vandanaṃ dāsyaṃ sakhyam ātmanivedanaṃ.
When man prays with a pure heart along these nine paths, this restlessness can gradually come to a level. But the young people of today are building up a soiled Manas with still more dirt. When a cloth covered in mud is washed again in mud, will that mud go? A cloth covered in mud must be washed in clean water. But in the young of today such understanding has come to nothing. In today's system of education, right discrimination and knowledge are disappearing. That is why selfish ways of thinking, bent on one's own gain, are growing. Today the student scrambles after worldly pleasures and riches. Students are the fortunate ones fit for the future. When the hearts of the students, who are to raise up the Bhārata of tomorrow, are soiled, the government of Bhārata too will turn out soiled.
Students! Your education is not learning picked up merely to fill the belly. Education means what came into being for the supreme goal of life. Students must first of all recognise the truth that education did not come into being for earning a living. You need not be born a man in order to live. Beasts, birds and animals go on living too. By learning skills that serve only to live in this way, we too become merely equal to a beast. The life of students must take shape as an ideal life. So you must make the effort to let the restless nature of the Manas steady itself little by little. That is concentration. If we are to gain this concentration, what is it we must do? We bend the body, mend the senses, end the mind: it is the process of immortality.
