Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

You receive only the news that comes from outside. You do not notice the nuisance that comes out of you. So first of all, recognise yourself. Set yourself right. After that, try to set others right. This is the matter students must recognise first. So it is through illusion that mishap comes about.

Now the third, karaṇāpāṭhana. What does it mean? Karaṇa means a sense; apāṭhana means weakness. The weakness of the senses. The senses have a sickness. The Manas experiences through senses bound up with this sickness. So the mind too turns into a sick one. What kind of sickness of the senses is this? The senses never show a thing as it is. The senses behave to suit the moment. A small example. In a village there was a big farmer. He was in every way the head of that village. In the same village there was a farmer of the middle sort. One day, out in the open, the cattle of the Reddi who was head of the village and the cattle of this middling farmer were grazing. For some reason a fight broke out among them. In this fight, struck who knows where, the Reddi's bull fell down and died. This middling farmer was distressed. This head of the village is a rich man, a man of great name, and that bull my bull has gored and killed! Very afraid of what trouble might come of it, he ran to the house of the village head. Out of this fear, which itself is a weakness, the poor man said the opposite of what he had to say. 'Sir! Your bull has gored our bull.' So he said. The Reddi listened in perfect calm. 'My dear! Men endowed with cleverness and skill of intellect are killing one another. Mute beasts and cattle have no knowledge, wisdom or insight at all. If cattle gore one another and kill each other, what can anyone do? You need not give it a thought, my dear! This is the way of the world,' he said calmly. But this farmer realised the slip he had made. 'Sir! Sir! I have made a great mistake. My bull has killed your bull,' he said. The Reddi's temper boiled over: 'What, has your arrogance grown too much? Who do you think I am?
