Passage 13

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

That your bull should kill my bull, mine, so great a head of the village: that is very dangerous. You have become arrogant. Shall I say all I please and tell you to bring a thousand rupees?' he said. Do you see! When his bull gored another's bull, he said it was natural. When another's bull gored his bull, he said it was wrong. Because such shifts of the senses, to suit the moment, have grown in the world, bad turns into good and good into bad. So the senses have a kind of sickness. Say we get malaria fever. Before this, whatever food you ate, the hot tasted hot, the salt salt, the bitter bitter and the sweet sweet. But when malaria fever comes, even a laḍḍū you eat tastes bitter. It is not a fault in the food. It is a fault in the senses. When we are in good health, we see white as white and black as black. But if jaundice comes, everything looks yellow. In the same way, the senses are bound up with sickness, so by following senses bound up with sickness the Manas too becomes a sickness. Karaṇāpāṭhana means that through the fault of the senses humanness is hidden to some extent.

Vipralipsa. It means simply the inability to bear another's good. Its meaning is envy. This envy is a very bad quality in man. If anyone is well off, they cannot bear it. If they see anyone good, they cannot stand it at all. In this world there may perhaps be a medicine for any disease, in any land; but a medicine that cures the disease called envy is nowhere to be found. So to be unable to bear the good of others is a bad quality. See what is good and rejoice. See those who rejoice, and rejoice with them. But you must not develop envy towards this one or that one. Do not be envious when you see those who have got higher marks. Rejoice, 'Though I have not, my brother has got good marks.' All are my brothers. Brotherhood of man, fatherhood of God: we must foster sacred feeling of this kind. What is the reason this feeling of envy arises today? Selfishness, selfishness. There is a great deal of this selfishness in students. Whenever you set out for a bus, there are so many old people, women and children.
