In plain words
True, all these sādhanas do cool Manas. But what is the use of cooling Manas? We must do away with Manas itself; if Manas is cooled, it can heat up again. So only the sādhanas practised to destroy Manas are the right sādhana for the search for the Ātma. Here, because the feeling that the body is the self has entered into man, the aham turns him along so many kinds of paths. The feeling of doership, 'I am doing, I am enjoying, I have conquered this', grows in man day by day. Students! Victory and defeat do not come from your karmas, or from your sādhanas, or from your efforts. Simply sunk in delusion, you take it that you achieved these tasks by your own effort, and you swell your Ahaṅkāra all the more. How many tasks do we not see that cannot achieve success, however many efforts are made! How many tasks do we not see that win success though nothing is done! Rather than making the effort, meeting with defeat through it and falling into sorrow, when you trust in God and recognise your tattva as God's work, then everything achieves success. We must recognise well that nothing happens by our effort. In our own body itself this evidence becomes plain to us. What effort are you making for the heart in your body to beat? Moment by moment you breathe in and breathe out. What effort are you making for this? The food you have eaten is being digested. What effort are you making for that? Are all these obtained by effort? No, no. 'I must live, I must live': when you think so, are you able to live? 'I must die, I must die': when you think so, do you die? Are you yourself the cause of your being born? No. No. So, if you inquire into this matter well, it is only your doership and enjoyership that make one's own Ahaṅkāra and possessiveness grow all the more.
Today all the tasks we carry out in the world are nothing but karmas done for the satisfaction of Manas. However long this satisfying of Manas goes on, Manas finds no satisfaction. What is this Manas? Manas itself is Māyā. Manas itself is desire. Manas itself is Avidyā, Manas itself is Prakṛti.
