Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If you make it fruitful, that is enough. Of what you have heard and seen, put even one or two into practice, and give the world what is exemplary in your life. We have taken up all the worldly proofs for this Ātma-principle. We shall inquire into this very thing again by the path that agrees with the Veda. It is the Veda alone that has given the people of Bhārata guidance in every way since time without beginning. It did not arise merely in one individual. Nor was it written down by scholars. It is apauruṣeya. It arose directly from sound itself. In each … there are thirty-three crore letters. But how did so many kinds of letters develop? There are only a few letters. And those heard, too. These are just the eight letters. They went on spreading over this very thing in many ways. The English letters are twenty-six. But within just these twenty-six letters people go on writing books of such size. No one can leave all these letters aside and write another. On a violin with four wires you can sing in four hundred rāgas. In just these eight letters, a, ka, ca, ṭa, ta, pa, ya, śa, it pervaded the eight directions, held all wealth within them and gave it to the world. Since this was gained by hearing, it got the name Śruti. Through this Śruti man discovered Satya, practised it and crossed over; from now on we shall try to learn that path through the ideal of the Veda.
