Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

With this country's water itself I have preserved this body. I must show gratitude to my country. In the same way, students must not forget their gratitude to our institution, or to those from whom we have reached such a standing. That is true dīkṣā, true sacrifice. We must give up self-interest, have faith in the good of others, and attain the Paramātma.

Students! Whether the Bhagavad Gītā, or the Bible, or the Qur'ān, or the king of books, or any other sacred book of whatever kind, of whatever kind, they did not come forth for pārāyaṇa. They were given to be practised. We must put them into practice. What use is it to read any number of ślokas? What use is it to make any number of commentaries? None.

A ladleful of milk from a gentle cow is enough; what use is a potful of an ass's milk?

One tea spoon of Cow milk is enough. We go on with our reading, the pārāyaṇa of the Bhagavad Gītā. They learn its seven hundred ślokas by heart. Apart from a load on the throat, our troubles are in no way ended. So many people give commentaries on the Bhagavad Gītā. Do you think this is Bhakti? This is show. Today, more than man in ākāra, in form, man in ācāra, in practice, is essential. Only through the man of practice does the world gain any good. Inquiry without practice is of no use. One may only win a name in some institution. If one rises higher still, one may receive titles like Padma Vibhūṣaṇa. But you cannot receive the title 'Śṛṇvantu viśve amṛtasya putraḥ'. There is no other title above this. The Veda proclaims, 'You are a son of immortality.' So, students! Do not scramble after wealth and office, or after name and fame. Develop love of country, love of God, love of Dharma. There is nothing higher than Dharma. Satyānnāsti paro dharmaḥ. There is no Dharma higher than Satya, nor any Satya higher than Dharma. Satya and Dharma, both, rest on each other; they cannot be apart. So we must practise at least these two and make every fitting effort to share them with others. Only then will we understand the principle of Ānanda. Truly, you are embodiments of Ānanda; it is for this Ānanda that you do all these karmas. Studying is for Ānanda, marrying is for Ānanda, wanting children is for Ānanda, wanting a job is for Ānanda, earning money is for Ānanda: the aim is one.
