In plain words

Show is a demonic quality in man. In this quality attachment and hatred, and delusion, grow beyond measure. From the coming together of the two, possessiveness and delusion, hatred too arises. So show roots out humanness. Whatever he does, a man must take part in the work with humility and obedience. With this show, a man becomes one who does himself a kind of dishonour.

A man must make firm in himself the conviction that it is in service to society alone that real fame comes to him. Real authority belongs only to him who truly serves. Such a one alone has real strength and capacity. If we want to become the leader of the country, we must stay a servant, and through that service develop fitting humility and obedience, and so teach the principle of service. In this service we must not wish for any authority at all.

If the very servant of the nation becomes the nation's leader, he goes on doing selfless service; can one who craves office be pure of heart? Tell Me, sirs; I will accept what you yourselves say.

We must do no service out of a craving for office. But unfortunately, today man stays behind when there is work and in front when there is office. The organisations were all formed for the sake of service, not for wrestling over office. Every single man must take part in this service with the full conviction, 'This is my duty; this body was given for the sake of service; so I must make the body fruitful through service alone.'

When the work that is given is done so as to win praise, all the Samitis become fruitful; if it is not done so, is it not betrayal of the Ātma itself? Do not forget so good a word.

However wealthy a man may be, however high the office he holds, he cannot in the least drive away the unrest within him. The one and only way to drive away this unrest is selfless service alone. So even all the pleasures in the world are only making man anxious; they are not raising him up.
