Learning alone is a man's beauty. Learning alone is a man's hidden wealth. It is learning that gives a man fame, happiness and enjoyment. Learning is the guru of the guru. When a man goes to foreign countries, learning is like a kinsman to him. Learning is another eye. What is worshipped by kings, too, is learning, not wealth. Without such sacred learning, a man can only be called a strange beast.
For acquiring character, not for acquiring wealth:
Education does not merely give a man knowledge alone. If giving worldly knowledge alone were the aim of education, it would ruin the progress of the world. Along with worldly knowledge we must also acquire character, humility and obedience. It is most urgent that every person recognise the principle of such sacred education. Today's student longs for riches, strength and friendship, but makes no effort at all for character. Education was set up for acquiring character alone, not for acquiring wealth. Every student must recognise this truth and act on it. Feeding information to the brain is not the only aim of education. We must make the heart pure.
Today man has forgotten this sacred principle of education. Problems that plunge every thinking man into confusion have grown thick and fast in the system of education today. Educational institutions, which should shape lives strong and fruitful in every field of life and should hand them on to others, are today going down a path of corruption. The discipline that should be foremost in the field of education has dwindled. The divine feelings that should be present without fail in the domain of learning have decayed.
