In plain words
Honour and respect have gone up in smoke. Without a thought, money itself has become the foundation of the system of education. That is, Lakṣmī has come and settled herself down in the temple of learning, which is the hermitage of Sarasvatī. Today man tries to obtain with money the learning that should be received with the heart. This is a danger to society itself. Only when these sacred feelings are present in the students who are to uplift the Bhārata of the future, the welfare of the country, he becomes one who has fostered the excellence of man. Only when we recognise well the chief principle, this aim, will the country prosper.
A few minutes ago the President, Venkataraman, explained well the principle of Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema and Ahiṃsā. These five words are the five vital breaths of man. Not only the five vital breaths, they are the five sheaths. Not only the five sheaths. They are the five elements. Without these, humanness itself will be wiped out.
Without Satya, Dharma, Prema and Śānti, all the learning you have gathered is worth nothing; without Satya, Dharma, Prema and Śānti, charity and good works come to nothing; without Satya, Dharma, Prema and Śānti, the fruit of ruling in high office is nothing; without Satya, Dharma, Prema and Śānti, the gain of many good deeds is nothing. To keep this mansion of Sanātana Dharma standing, these four virtues are its foundation walls, my friends. What else can I make known to you beyond this, members of this assembly, counted among the good and the virtuous!
What the student of today should learn in full measure are these heaps of nine gems in this Kali age: the spirit of tyāga, humility, service to society, friendship, discipline, devotion to Satya, Prema, Satya and Ahiṃsā on the divine way. The boys and girls who practise these nine gems are the great ones of Bhārata's good fortune.
