Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

One who lacks trikaraṇa śuddhi is not a man at all. You must recognise that he is a man in outward shape alone, not one who truly embodies it. So you must trust this Bhārata, which teaches such a sacred principle, moral, worldly, of Dharma, spiritual and scientific, and give it due gratitude. First of all, honour your parents. Win the favour of your parents. Those who are not blessed with the Prema of their own parents can never experience the Prema of others in life. Prema, what we call Prema, must spring from the heart; it is not something that comes in words. Only when we develop such a principle of Prema will humanness blossom. Students! Girl students! You must grow into ideal students. Wherever you go, you must recognise well the principle of our Institute and act on it.

Renounce selfishness.

That itself is the gratitude you give to our institution. We have asked for nothing. Our chief aim is that you grow into right, ideal students. Only when you are such students will your studying here, entering the world and giving it an ideal have a meaning. Renounce selfishness. Wherever you go, selfishness is selfishness. Look back just once. When the month of April comes, in every educational institution the students' Results all keep coming out. In all the papers there are the numbers of those who have passed. There are some lakhs of numbers. Truly, how happy we should be to see them! We should rejoice that so many have passed. But he is not happy in that way. With selfishness he tries to look for where his own number is among so many lakhs of numbers. He pushes all the rest aside. If you truly rejoice at seeing all these numbers, your own number will surely be there among them. So there should not be so much selfishness. When they have a photo taken at convocation time or at some other time, all the figures come out well, but they do not look at those. They look to see how their own figure has come out. We must put away selfishness of this kind. When we stand in a queue for a bus, we should see how many old people there are and how many patients there are, and try to give them the seat first. No. The selfishness is that the seat must fall to you alone. In Vedānta: na karmaṇā na prajayā dhanena tyāgenaike amṛtatva mānasu. We must practise tyāga. That is the true immortality. First of all, we must do good to others. 'Paropakāraḥ puṇyāya pāpāya parapīḍanaṃ.' Help ever hurt never. This is something students must recognise.
