Passage 15

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What is the meaning of this śloka? We must move about together. We must grow together. Together we must nourish the knowledge we have gained. Together, without discord, we must live in plenty. This itself is Śānti, Śānti, Śānti for the world. So when we want peace in the world, we must live together with all, without discord, in plenty. There must be no discord.

You must think, just once, how sacred are the ideas of this Upaniṣad. The ṛṣis of those days were not people without intelligence. They were people who did more research than today's scientists. Not even a part of the research they did is found in the people of today. All their lives they carried on research. Today's scientists sit in a dark room and do research. Today's research is merely like frogs in a well. The research of those days went on like the roaming of a frog in the ocean. They carried on research that was broad. Today it is research joined with selfishness and self-interest. Theirs was research joined with selflessness and freedom from Ahaṅkāra. Today we treat the ṛṣis with ridicule, as good-for-nothing people. That is not so. The very divine gems they bestowed keep nourishing the humanity of today. So these Upaniṣads are treasures of nectar, churned out of the śāstras and handed down. So I hope that you will bring the ideas of the Upaniṣads, through little, little matters, into the paths needed in our daily life and enjoy your life; with this hope and blessing, I bring my discourse to a close.

Tomorrow let us take up another Upaniṣad. All these Upaniṣads lead us near to God. Upa: samīpa. They lead us near to God. That is what our Vice Chancellor asked for at the very start. He asked to be told the ways of going near to God. So, remembering the Name of God, setting a divine life on the sacred path, we must offer a peaceful life as an ideal. Disturbances in the world have grown great. Unrest has gone beyond all bounds. Security has fallen away.
