Passage 14

In plain words

Students! Self means the feeling of the Ātma itself. I have told the children many times. There are two kinds of self. What are those selves? The one-letter self is one: I.. eye. Three letters is one: eye-body. One letter: I, the Ātma. This I is a single letter. Ekaṃ sat viprā bahudhā vadanti. That is the true Ātma principle. Here there is no difference between I and one. In counting we say one. In letters we say I. In counting it grows into many. It grows less. 1+1+1+1 = 4: so it becomes. I+I+I+... Put down ten million I's: one I is left. This neither grows nor grows less. I+I+I+... When we go on in this way, all of them become just the one I. So such an I is the Ātma principle itself. In this crowd there is Rāmayya: who is Rāmayya? He raises his hand, saying I. Who is Kṛṣṇayya? He raises his hand, saying I. When asked who Rāmamma is, she raises her hand, saying I. When asked who Kṛṣṇamma is, she raises her hand, saying I. But Rāmamma and Kṛṣṇamma are only separate forms and names. Rāmayya and Kṛṣṇayya are only separate forms and names. To my question the same answer, I, I, came from everyone; so I is everywhere. That is the true Ātma. Such a nature and such faith must grow in men. Today there is no such nature. On the basis of the body, on the basis of the form, I. I am so and so. So we speak of ourselves. No. No. How long is this to last? All these forms and names are only like bubbles on water. But what does not change, what stays for ever, is the I, the Ātma alone. With this as our support, we must carry out our duty through body, mind and senses. Students! We must develop this divinity of equal vision. We must wish for the happiness of all. Our happiness rests within the happiness of all. Our happiness is not separate. Eating, we may eat separately. But as for wishing, we must wish for the Ānanda of all. Breadth of feeling such as this must grow in students. Many more fine ideals are in this Praśnopaniṣad to explain such broad feelings well, to make them clear and to widen them.

From tomorrow we shall talk together of those matters: new matters, … matters, matters that bring enthusiasm, matters that raise us to the highest level. Today there is another programme. Today is Sunday, a holiday. All the students did social work.
