In plain words
Its name is social work, but in my sight it turned into show work. Not a single student did the work properly. Sitting under the trees and chatting in groups and groups: social work in today's Kali age is like that. We must not do so. Whatever work we do, we must believe we are doing it for ourselves. Am I doing it with satisfaction or not: you must give a true answer to your own conscience. Many children sitting on the lawn, pulling up one blade of grass at a time: is this social work? No. No. We must do sādhanas in harmony with our health, our Ānanda and our good. The whole area around us must be clean. For it to be clean, we must clean it. This is social work. Not for ourselves, but for the people. For society. For the public. Do service that is of use to the people. We must do service that gives the people health. We must do service that sets the people an ideal. The girls did well. The boys did not do so well. They went on doing it only as if for show. You must not do so, my dear; we must be satisfied wholeheartedly, to our own conscience. We must give up the fear of what others will think. We bathe, each of us himself. We take off all the dirt that is on us. Do we leave all the dirt as it is, because someone or other will think something? No. Whatever the world thinks, what I do is good work. That courage must come to us. That faith must come to us. Today this faith has grown thin in the young.
Whatever service we do, we must do it with all our heart. Only then does it give the fitting fruit. You are tired, so today take part in the music programme; from tomorrow keep your hearts in the right state and record the divine teachings within your hearts. There is no use in merely recording on tape. A tape recording stays only on the tape recorder. The record must be here (pointing to the heart). Only then is it like a negative. If we have this negative with us, we can print it as many times as we like, at any time, in any place. If we record on tape, it is only like a Polaroid picture. It is of no use. Students! You must fill your hearts with the things these elders come and teach, and the counsel that all those of experience give.
