In plain words
In this way they taught. Dear son! Hardships and pleasures keep following man. But do not be frightened or shaken by them; stay steady. Whatever the circumstances, do not ever stray from Satya. Do not ever let go of your Dharma. That which satisfies your heart. Do not ever let go of the contentment of the Ātma. We must satisfy that Conscience. Today no man has such a thing as conscience at all. Still less is he making any effort to satisfy it. They spoke of it as ātmasākṣi. That is why, follow the master: that is, follow your Ātma, your conscience. Face the devil. Fight to the end. Finish the game: this is the true path of life. But maxims of truth like these are found nowhere in today's learning.
Learning means Ātmavidyā, and that is all. All learnings are aparavidyās. They are learnings learnt merely for the belly's food. This learning too is needed. But along with it we must also cultivate Ātmavidyā. If man had only the senses, he could make his life worthwhile with food, sleep, fear and mating; but beyond them there are also the Manas, the Buddhi and the Ātma. We must keep their contentment too in view. But the man of today thinks food to fill the stomach, sleep to fill the eyes, children to fill the house, only this much is enough, this is the supreme goal of life. This is only a narrow feeling. There is something beyond even this. Contentment of the mind is most needed. Through these we gain no contentment of the mind. This contentment of the mind is gained in the śreyomārga alone. The śreyomārga means that a feeling, transcendent and divine, must arise. It is what reaches a level higher than humanness. That itself is the divine principle. If divine feeling itself is absent in man, humanness itself becomes void. So, students! We must recognise the way to develop humanness. Man must live as man indeed. The man who cannot love his fellow men, the man who cannot love his mother, the man who cannot love his wife, the man who cannot love man: how can he love God? That is impossible. So first of all try to love your fellow man. Prema is not merely something that grows in a moment and wanes in a moment. Prema that grows and wanes is not Prema at all. It must always go on growing and growing. This itself is the infinite principle. This itself is Love is God, Live in Love.
