Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

He trusts what should not be trusted. He does not trust what is worth trusting; what is the reason for this? For this too, it is selfishness alone. We must try to recognise well the nature of the mind. Man himself creates the world; who is man? Man is the mind itself. What is the mind? Nothing but a gathering of resolves. What are resolves? Nothing but the actions we set out to practise in daily life. So only when actions today are good will the world be good. When actions go bad, this world goes bad. So the good and bad of the world depend on the actions of the individual. The world is never bad. In the world there is never any bad. In the world there is never any sorrow; we ourselves create these sorrows and these bad things for ourselves. By your bad feelings you fall into sorrow. Keep the mind always sacred; see that no bad feeling enters it. When anything bad enters it, think of God at once and put that bad far from you. We must not, wanting thorn trees to grow, make a bed for them, give them manure and try to raise them. Thorn trees and fruit trees, both are there. But we must recognise the way of it: where to tend the fruit tree and where to tend the thorn tree. Only when we set the fruit tree in the middle and grow the thorn tree as a fence does the fruit too grow well. The thorn trees too do us only good. So when we use both in the right way, both are only good for us.

Just as man has happiness and sorrow, in this world there are heat and cold. Just as we conduct ourselves in keeping with heat and cold, so we must set ourselves to conduct ourselves in keeping with happiness and sorrow. Now the heat of the sun is very hot. Because it is hot, what kind of clothes do we wear? We wear the clothes the heat needs, clothes that are very Thin. Then, when we go to a Hill Station, the cold is great. We cannot put this cold away. But we must put on clothes fit for that cold and protect ourselves from the cold. We must put on clothes fit for this heat and keep away from the heat. Just as, when we adjust to heat and cold in this way and follow them, we gain the happiness that fits, so we must cope with sorrow and grief and make the effort that fits to keep away from them.
