Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So only when man first puts his selfishness far from him will there be no chance at all to enter into these bad deeds.

What is most important for man? Fear of sin, love of God, social morality: we must believe in these three as the three divine forms. When there is no fear of sin, man girds himself to do anything at all.

Because of the ignorance that has no fear of sin, because of that which has no love of God, human nature has sunk down among men: this is the very upheaval against world peace.

This, and nothing else, is the upheaval against world peace. Only because of these two, having no fear of sin and having no love of God, has this country fallen into upheaval. Students! You who will uplift the Bhārata of the future, you yourselves are its support for the life to come. So I hope that, with a pure heart and with sacred feelings, recognising the truth that this body has come into being for the good of the country, you will be a true help and support to your fellow men and grow the broad feeling 'Lokāḥ samastāḥ sukhino bhavantu'. The great ṛṣi Vyāsa composed the eighteen Purāṇas. But what is their inner meaning?

In the eighteen Purāṇas, Vyāsa's words are two: doing good to others is for merit, causing pain to others is for sin.

Help ever hurt never. Keep these two safe in your heart. In any circumstances at all, see that you hurt no one. As far as possible, you too must see that you do not suffer hurt. Only when there is safety in the Self can we practise what is sacred in help. So, Self-help: we must try to recognise the reality of both, our own good and the good of others.

Students! Human life today is bound up with many problems. It is becoming simply a garland of problems. What should we trust? What should we not trust? What should we do, what should we not do: man today has lost the power to make this enquiry into the lasting and the passing.
