In plain words
The learned of today have gone on forgetting this complete principle of knowledge. This knowledge is … Dharma itself. As Dharma grows in the world, so in keeping with it this knowledge too grows. The true ground for the growth of this knowledge of Dharma is the welfare of the country, the prosperity of the country. If the country is to stand in welfare and prosperity, the knowledge of Dharma is essential.
Vyāsa and Vālmīki are holy maharṣis. They set the … principle of God in the form of ślokas and went on proclaiming this knowledge and Dharma to the world. But the Purāṇas they wrote are very ancient. Because these are ancient moral teachings, they came to be called Purāṇas. The Bhārata and the Rāmāyaṇa have gone on teaching an ideal Dharma, not to the land of Bhārata alone but to the whole world. From ancient times this very culture of Bhārata has gone on bringing lasting peace and safety to every country. Though no difference of any kind and no tie of any kind may arise, the tradition of the Āryas is this: ‘lokāssamastā sukhino bhavantu’. This is a divine mantra, filled with oneness, the foremost thing. Paying no heed at all to the sway of place, time and object, seeing the whole as one and believing it divine: this itself is the message it taught. Giving up narrow feelings of ‘I’ and ‘my own’, the culture of Bhārata taught the knowledge that all should be happy. In keeping with this very Dharma, what is the inner meaning of Vyāsa's caring nothing at all for Duryodhana, Duḥśāsana and the rest, who had every enjoyment and fortune, all wealth, the strength of money, of body, of numbers, of arms and of intellect, and caring for Dharmaja alone? The great ones of that time took as their aim that Dharma alone is foremost; recognising the truth that this world is run by Dharma itself, and recognising the truth that all the karmas of Bhārata rest on Dharma, Vyāsa went on caring for Dharmaja. The Rāmāyaṇa, which taught morality and honesty to the whole world itself, is as dear as life to every family. How brothers in a family should conduct themselves, how they should bow their heads to a father's command and act, with what forbearance husband and wife should live their bond: in this way the Rāmāyaṇa showed well the ties of kinship that belong to a family.
