Passage 1

In plain words

“Our land of Bhārata is the motherland that gave birth to great souls renowned across the continents, the land of battle that drove out the warriors of the West and won its freedom. This land of Bharata is a divine land that showed the power of the intellect not in scholarship alone but in music, literature and the sciences. Students! Since you were born in such a land of Bharata, the duty of guarding the wealth of Dharma of this Mother Bharata rests on you alone...”.

Students! Teachers! Lovers of learning!

From age to age Bhārata, through the power of its spiritual principle, has been bringing steady peace and security to all nations. That is why, from those days to these, “Lokāssamastā ssukhino bhavantu” has been the chief mark of the Hindu tradition. There is a Satya that does not change with time, does not fade in history, does not wane in the deluges and does not grow with creation; the culture of Bhārata is the very form given to that Satya. The culture of Bhārata is beyond compare, most wonderful. This culture is the root foundation of the gross world, of the world of living beings, of the realm of the mind and of social life. Sanātana Dharma alone is the inner soul of this culture. So what students must guard is Satya and Dharma, and not the country. That Satya and Dharma will themselves guard the country. That is why they said, “Dharmorakṣati rakṣitaḥ.” Today the people of Bhārata have forgotten this sacred, divine culture; trusting only in passing things, they are meeting with unrest in life.

Only in the mirror of education can we see the divine svarūpa and svabhāva of man. For the Satya that gives form and outline to creation itself, education is like the chief principle. What students have to attain are human values. However many subjects we learn, however great the knowledge we gain, we must grow human values too along with them. What students need is not cleverness; character is indispensable.
