Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Today humanness is nowhere to be seen.

Embodiments of Prema! All of you must think, “I am a human being, I am a human being; I am not a beast, I am not a beast”. To think ‘I am a human being’ is only half the Satya. What is the other half of the Satya? I am not a beast. Only when these two come together does it become the full Satya. I am a human being, not a beast. When one is like that, there is no humanness beyond this. Such a person lives radiant and exemplary and is an example to the country as well. So when we live together with one another in mutual goodwill, with sacred qualities like kindness, Prema, forbearance and sympathy, we can serve the country a great deal. Because all of us have gathered in this place today, I hope that in time to come you will show the example of these village officers grandly to this very Anantapur district, keep up the renown that in the whole of Bhārata Anantapur district is a model district, and, along with that renown, show a fitting life as an example too.

What use is it to serve Rāma without serving the village?

Just as the river Gaṅgā, which spread the sacred fame of Bhārata through the world, is holy everywhere, so I hope the one who is a village officer will show himself holy in every work and in every word; hoping this and blessing you, I bring My talk to a close. Service of the village is service of Rāma, My dear ones! Look. If you do not serve the village, what use is it to serve Rāma? Many people say they want a temple of Rāma. If you cannot install Rāma in the temple of your own heart, how can you install Him in a temple of Rāma? So keep the temples of your hearts safe. In that heart, hold that the village itself is the temple of Rāma and that service of the village is service of Rāma.

In this way it turns into the very power for everything: for livelihood, for Mukti, for delight, for detachment, for devotion, for everything.
