In plain words
Only the clouds filled with nothing but air fly up higher and higher. In the same way, the life of one who talks nothing but gas all his life goes on flying up and up. But the cloud called the heart, filled with pure words, comes down very low and lives in humility and obedience. Dharmaja had such a heart. Never at any time did he speak a harsh word. Bearing all his pains, he followed Dharma calmly. The reason for this: in him there was no other thought at any time but the thought of Kṛṣṇa. At last, when he had conquered the Kauravas, taken Hastināpura into his hands and was ruling with Satya and Dharma, the news came that Kṛṣṇa had left them and gone back to His own abode. Hearing this news, Dharmaja at once called his younger brothers. “I do not want this life without Kṛṣṇa. Let us give up this kingdom, this rule, this rank, this honour, renounce every attachment and follow Kṛṣṇa's way,” he resolved. He called all the people together. “O people! Till now you have looked upon us with so much love, honour and respect. We too, as far as we could, have looked upon the people with love, as our own children. The people to the ruler and the ruler to the people: theirs is a close bond of kinship. But our true kinsman, friend, charioteer, guru and God has left us. So we do not want this life. What use to us is this life without our Lord, without our friend, without our kinsman, without our brother-in-law? He brought us up and raised us, and till now He sustained our lives, we who lost our father in childhood: Kṛṣṇa. Whatever our state today, whatever our course, all of it is His gift! We lived by His command. The one who gave us such commands is ours no longer. So we no longer wish to rule this. We are setting our grandson Parīkṣit on the throne as the great king. You, the people, must uplift and nourish this little boy and bring him to his rightful state,” and with that Dharmarāja entrusted him to them and set out.
