In plain words
When we want the five elements to become pure, it is not possible at all without the spiritual path. Spirituality is the goal of our life, the Dharma of life. Adi + Ātma. What is the Ātma? What is joined to the body alone is the jīvātma. The collective form present in all bodies is Brahman. We must recognise well the principle of consciousness in all beings.
Discipline must stay with us like a shadow, wherever we go
What are Swami's ideals? Swami's ideals are not something grand, or unbearable, or impossible to carry out. What I always say is only a few things! I speak mainly of one or two. I tell you not to talk too much; whom does that benefit? Is it any comfort to Me? Do I gain anything from it? These words start off little by little at the beginning. As they go on, they enter another path. It is through these very words that anger, hatred, jealousy and all such things come in. When these evil thoughts have entered, then you drift far from Bābā. Just as our shadow follows us and never leaves us, so discipline must stay with us like our shadow, wherever we go. What is this discipline? Good conduct, good speech, good sight, good hearing, good thoughts: all these are part of discipline! These five feelings, bound up with the five sheaths and with the five vital breaths, must also become pure. For this is a life that hangs on food. Man today does not journey, among the five sheaths, the annamaya, prāṇamaya, manomaya, vijñānamaya and ānandamaya, as far as the vijñānamaya. How then can Ānanda be attained? He goes as far as the annamaya. After that he goes a little way into the manomaya. Once that is done, he wants nothing more at all.
