Passage 22

In plain words

So his great property is a dog and a donkey. Leaving the work to them, he lives at ease, poor fellow! When the dog barks, he opens the door and comes out. He lived in the faith that then he could catch the thieves, poor fellow! That dog and donkey were so faithful. What happened one day? Relatives came to the house. All the cooking was done, and everything was used up. He could not give the dog even a little food, poor fellow. It was very weak. That night it dug a hollow and lay down in that hollow. It was without any strength. It had not even the strength to bark if anyone came. That night thieves came. The dog did not bark. Because the dog had not been fed, it had no strength to bark. And this fellow does not give even the donkey a little grass. It goes along eating the papers in the bazaar, poor thing! But it stays faithful. When the thieves came and the dog did not bark, the donkey brayed, poor thing! So as to help its master. As this donkey brayed louder and louder, the washerman could not sleep and came out. Do you see how great the faithfulness of this dog and donkey to their master is! Today even beasts have faithfulness, but men do not. What use, what good, are people without such gratitude to the world?

Do not speak bad words; do not listen to bad words!

You are all good! But grow your good qualities a little more! Inquire, ‘What are the things that please Swami?’ and conduct yourselves well! Win a good name; that alone is enough for Me. I am very much afraid of what bad name you may earn when you go out, of what factory the MBA boys may go to and get caught in its troubles. Now, wherever you go, there is much trouble in the factories. See that you do not go there, saying, ‘I have passed my MBA and won a gold medal,’ and get caught up in those troubles. Learn good speech. Keep your looks good.
