Passage 30

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The other dog does not know. Let one dog bark, and all the other dogs bark. This usually happens in villages. In towns too! Here, seeing his own guilty conscience, a man gets somewhat worked up. Seeing his own shadow, he barks. All the other dogs have no discrimination of what for, or why. They too sit there barking. Is this not blindness? We should rebuke him, saying this is his fault, his wrong; but if on account of it you too start shouting, is there any sense in it? Tell Me. Then what use is our Vijñāna? They do not follow the good; they follow only the bad. Wherever it may be, whoever it may be, keep away from bad company. Do not join in it. When anyone speaks bad words, cut him off with ‘get out’. This is for your good! If he still goes on talking beyond all bounds, give him one good, smart, brisk blow. He will not talk again. That is true sāttvic growth. Seeing the bad, you may hate it as much as you like; seeing the good, you may sacrifice everything. So make sacrifices and gain the good. Give the bad everything and let it go. For all these things happen according to the company.

Since you were given a tongue, sanctify the tongue with the remembrance of God's Name!

If any one boy does wrong in our hostel, everyone gets a bad name. The children think, ‘If someone does wrong, punishment for all of us.’ But this cannot be helped. For it is the fault of company. A mosquito bit us as we lay at night. Because it bit us all night and we could not sleep, the next day we take the Flit and spray. We kill not only the one mosquito that bit but many hundreds of mosquitoes around. What is the reason? How can one search out the one that bit you? They are all in one swarm. So, thinking that if not today then tomorrow it will bite, we have to kill them all! That is just how punishment comes to you. There are many good children.
