In plain words
Even the greatest scholars of today, failing to recognise this Satya, pretend to be devotees and go on following wicked parents. No one was more wicked than Hiraṇyakaśipu. He made many attempts to turn his son Prahlāda from the path of God to the path of the world. He gave strict orders to Caṇḍa and Amarka too: “There is no need to teach my son the branches of learning. Teach him worldly qualities. Teach him the six inner enemies, desire, anger, greed, delusion, pride and envy,” he said. He brought upon Prahlāda's body every danger he wished. He had him bitten by snakes. He had him trampled by elephants. He threw him into the sea. But his Bhakti for God alone kept that Prahlāda safe at every moment. Holding that it did not matter that he was his father, Prahlāda defied the wickedness and took refuge in God. Who is a father? Merely by begetting, is one a father? Is that greatness? Even a dog has ten pups born to it. Even the dog is better than you! So does one become a father just by begetting sons? No, no.
The lack of learning that brings humanness to light is itself the cause of Bhārata's plight today
The father's joy in a son is not born the moment the son is born. ‘When people see that son and praise him, on that day the father gains the joy of a son!’ ‘As when there is sandalwood in a forest that shines’: if in a great forest there is a single jasmine creeper giving fragrance, the whole forest gives out fragrance. In that same forest, if there is only a creeper that gives off a stench, it gives the whole forest a stench. ‘If in a family there is one virtuous man, his virtue shines, and his family shines.’ So only those who bring forth such a worthy son, a true son, one who carries a good tradition, are parents. ‘The father who says, “Reach Hari,” is a father indeed,’ said Prahlāda. ‘The guru who speaks of the Lord of the earth is a guru indeed,’ he said. Such gurus and such parents have become scarce today. That is why all that won good fame for Bhārata and brought it renown, age after age and generation after generation, is going to waste today.
