Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We must earn virtue. Parents today do not give the teaching that earns such virtue. They do not warn a boy, whatever wicked way he has taken to. They forgive the faults and mistakes their sons commit and keep praising them. They are growing up like Duryodhana and Duśśāsana. Children go astray like this precisely because there are such fathers, fathers like Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Dhṛtarāṣṭra lacked not only the eyes of flesh; he lacked the eye of Jñāna too. He was utterly blind. The fathers of today are becoming like that blind man. They do not rebuke the wrong their children do in the least. They do not teach them that this is wrong. These foolish parents are afraid that if they teach them like this, the children will come to some harm, will go off somewhere, might even take their own lives. To punish is your Dharma. Your right. Why fear that something may happen to them? If such wicked sons come to harm, there is no wrong in it. Rather than tormenting their parents all their lives, it is better even that they die like this! So why should you grieve like this? Cowardly, the parents are afraid of what will become of their sons. Whatever happens, what is the loss? What death is there on earth worse than ill fame? What wealth is there, at any time, beyond fame? Rather than sons who fall into ill fame, even a short life that brings fame is enough.

The first thing man must attain is Prema for God

What must man attain first of all today? What man must attain first of all is Prema for God. This Prema itself gives Śānti to the world, Śānti to society, Śānti to the home. By the virtues and the Prema of the individual, the family gains Śānti and security. When the people in society attain Prema for God, society gains happiness and Śānti. When the people themselves attain Prema for God, the whole universe gains happiness and Śānti. Happiness and Śānti are not in wealth, nor in strength, nor in positions: they are not there, not there, not there. Wealth, riches, position, strength: all these bring only fear and unrest; they do not bring Śānti and fearlessness in the least.
