In plain words
Even for the sin of killing a cow there is atonement. Even for the sin of killing a child there is atonement. For betraying the guru and betraying God there is no atonement at all. If you become ungrateful, you become lower than a wild beast. So, Karṇa! If you are a man of virtue, that is enough for me. You bear anger against Arjuna alone. I am content with this. Only do not kill the rest: Dharmaja, Bhīma, Nakula and Sahadeva,’ she said.
On any path whatever, there has to be a test for us
See how noble the feelings were even in these Pāṇḍavas! Those born to Kuntī were only three: Dharmaja, Bhīma and Arjuna! Nakula and Sahadeva were born to Mādrī, the stepmother. When that mother was dying, Dharmaja made a vow: ‘Mother! For my father's sake you are giving up your life. I will care for these two brothers more than for my own brothers. I will hold them as my true brothers and love them.’ Once, during the Pāṇḍavas' life in the forest, they grew thirsty. On that occasion Dharmaja had to face a test. In life there is a test in every matter. Otherwise we get no rest at all. If you want to go for a small job, they set you a test there. But in this modern age, people say there should be no test where God is concerned. On any path whatever, in every matter, moral, physical, dhārmic, spiritual, worldly or of Vairāgya, there has to be a test for us! But no one bears this in mind; so: ‘Swami! Don't test us,’ they say. The sooner the test takes place, the sooner you can rise to a higher state. A boy sitting in the first class: ‘Swami! Don't test me’: if he says that, he can never go up to the second class. He passes the test and goes to the second class; there he passes a test again and goes to the third.
