In plain words

The Prema of God is selfless, free of doubt, stainless, eternal, beyond the guṇas

When God, who is prajñā itself, pervades everywhere like this, what is the secret in His taking these Avatāras? Well, there is indeed a reason for His taking these Avatāras. There are two: ‘pratyakṣa’ and ‘parokṣa’. There are two: ‘antar-śakti’ and ‘bahir-śakti’. There are two: ‘antar-bhūta’ and ‘bahir-bhūta’. There is fire in firewood. But that fire lies within it. It is inside it. It is unmanifest. So if you put rice on this firewood, if you set a pot on that firewood, the rice will not turn into cooked rice. Only when the fire in that wood comes out manifest does it burn the wood, boil the rice and turn it into cooked rice. Every body too is just like a piece of firewood! Within this wood lies the principle of the Ātma. To make it manifest, we must experience the principle of Prema. Another small example. We have a matchbox in our hand. But it does not burn our pockets at all. There is fire in every stick. When you take out that stick and strike it on the box, the fire becomes manifest. That fire, once manifest, burns one's own self, one's shirt, one's pocket, everything. In the same way, though in man there is the light, the very form of wisdom, of the principle of Prema called divinity, if you want to make it manifest, only when Prema is joined with Prema does that manifest form appear to us before our eyes. The chemical on the match is one and the same. The chemical on the matchbox is one and the same. Only when the two are rubbed together does the fire become visible to us. Some people think the Prema in themselves and the Prema in God are one and the same. But the Prema of God is selfless, free of doubt, stainless, eternal, beyond the guṇas. Against this, the love of individuals is selfish, self-seeking, bound by the guṇas. With love of this kind the principle of divine Prema cannot mix at all. So the day man gives up the Ahaṅkāra, ostentation, envy, selfishness and the rest that are in him, that very day God enters there.
