Passage 17

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Every single student must become an ideal student. But that is not happening at all. There are many kinds of reasons for this. Among them are the faults that come from company too. By this fault of company alone everything is going to ruin.

Whatever qualities those we make friends with have, those qualities come to us

Whether for rising up or for sinking down to ruin, this fault of company itself is the root cause. There is dust. If this dust makes friends with the wind, it flies up to the sky. It has no wings to fly up. By its friendship with the wind it went up to the sky. If it makes friends with water, that earth sinks down into a pit. It has no legs to go down. It has no wings to fly up. Whatever qualities those we make friends with have, those qualities come to us. That is precisely why they said, Tell me your company, I shall tell you what you are. When we keep company with bad people, we too become bad. A goldsmith in a white shirt is doing his gold work. He keeps blowing on the furnace through a pipe. Because he is there in the company of charcoal, his white cloth turns black! All the while he blows, particles of charcoal keep falling on his shirt. What he does is gold work, nothing else! But all that charcoal dust comes and falls on him. Company is the cause of it. So we must join good company. Only then can we become people of good qualities. Bring in the principle of Prema! Make ties only with those who have Prema! Prema is not worldly; it is filled with divinity.
