In plain words
That is why the Veda declares of it, “yato vāco nivartante aprāpya manasāsaha”: neither speech nor mind can describe it. You cannot say that the worth of this Prema is such or such, so much or so much. You cannot set forth its taste as this or that.
The gem of Prema can be won only through Prema
The Śāstras and the Vedas have always described amṛta as endless, immortal and supremely sweet. Yet that amṛta is insipid beside the taste of Prema. This Prema is a most precious diamond. It is not to be had in every place, everywhere. This diamond is found only in the empire of Prema, in the street of Prema, in the shop of Prema. The empire of Prema is the empire of the heart itself! Only when the heart is filled with Prema does it become the empire of the heart. In the street of Prema that is the mind (that is, only when the mind becomes full of Prema) this gem is found. So this gem is found only when there is a heart and a mind filled with Prema.
If you want to buy such a diamond, you cannot buy it with the good deeds called japa and dhyāna, nor with yajñas and yāgas, nor with the acts called contemplation and bhajan. Rites such as yajñas and yāgas, charity and good works, contemplation and bhajans: all these bring only mental satisfaction. Through them we cannot win the jewel called Prema. This jewel of Prema can be won only through Prema.
The path of Śānti, the path of friendship, the path of a parent's tender love, the path of affection, the path of sweetness and the rest, all six kinds, are contained in the path of Prema alone. The essence of every sādhana is gathered in this path of Prema alone. The more we love God, the more Ānanda arises in our mind. As Prema dwindles, Ānanda wanes in man.
